The Cementerio series began, almost by accident, when I sought refuge from the heat and dust as I was stuck behind some slow-moving trucks on a bad road in Costa Rica in June 2003. When I discovered how sweetly the Costa Ricans decorated their graves with hand-made art, I began visiting and photographing cemeteries throughout the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica.
